What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is often described as a skin condition that causes redness, but it is actually found in four different subtypes, each with different symptoms.

The following are the subtypes of rosacea:

Subtype 1 – flushed, red facial skin, facial spider veins, sensitivity, and dry skin
Subtype 2 – acne breakouts, very red skin, oily skin, sensitive skin
Subtype 3 – rare type of rosacea with bumpy portions of skin, especially on the nose, and oily skin
Subtype 4 – affects the eyes causing burning, stinging, blurry vision, and dryness
The exact cause of rosacea has not yet been determined, but there have been studies to try to determine if it is linked to genetics, an immune deficiency, a possible intestine infection, or from excess oil in the facial pores.

Rosacea Treatment

If you have a severe case of rosacea that is affecting your facial skin, our dermatologist can help you to relieve the symptoms and reduce the redness using photodynamic therapy.  First, we will apply Levulan, which is amino-levulenic acid. After this is absorbed into your skin and glands, we will utilize a pulsed dye laser that will help to destroy bacteria and reduce the output of oil glands. In many cases, we find that this helps to reduce the redness and clear the rosacea.
